James Maddison GRACE, 1 son of Joshua GRACE and Susan Jane SIMMONS , was born on 2 Feb 1809 in Georgia and died on 19 Oct 1862 in Henry County, Alabama, at age 53.
 

General Notes: Found in Pike County Georgia on the 1840 Census with: wife age 20 - 30 and 3 sons under 5 2

James married Marion UNKNOWN about 1833 in GA. They had nine children: Joshua Thomas, James Linson, Noel Hamilton, Agrippa Sawyer, Morgan B., Philip C., Susan Ann, Samuel S , and Mary Ann E. .

Joshua Thomas GRACE 2 was born in 1835, died on 27 Jun 1864, at age 29, and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Confederate Section, Atlanta, GA.
 

General Notes: Listed in the marriage records of Randolph County GA as "John" Found on 1850 Upson County GA Census with father, mother and siblings age 15 Joshua died on June 27, 1864 at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in North Georgia. He died 8 days before his last child's birth which took place on July 4, 1864. He can be found on the muster roll of Company B, 1st Alabama Infantry which was raised in Barbour County, AL in 1861. Alternate name on roll Joseph T. Grace (First_Last) Regiment Name 1 Alabama Infantry. Side Confederate Company B Soldier's Rank_In Private Soldier's Rank_Out Private Alternate Name Joshua T./Grace Notes Film Number M374 roll 17 Company B was also known as the Eufaula Rifles from Barbour County, AL Notes for 1st Alabama Regiment: Major Campaigns Pensacola Campaign 1861 Island #10 and Prison Life 1862 Port Hudson Campaign July 1863 Meridian, Mobile and Georgia Campaign 1863-64 Tennessee Campaign 1864 Carolina Campaign 1864-1865 CONFEDERATE ALABAMA TROOPS 1st Regiment, Alabama Infantry 1st Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Pensacola, Florida, in March, 1861. The men were from the counties of Tallapoosa, Pike, Lowndes, Wilcox, Talladega, Barbour, and Macon. For a year it manned the batteries at Pensacola, then with 1,000 men moved to Missouri where all but a detachment were captured at Island No. 10. The prisoners were exchanged during September, 1862, and it was soon ordered to Port Hudson. Here the unit endured many hardships, and nearly 500 were captured on July 9, 1863. Exchanged and reorganized with 610 effectives the 1st joined the Army of Tennessee and served in General Quarles' and Shelley's Brigade. It took an active part in the Atlanta and Tennessee Campaigns, and ended the war in North Carolina. Its casualties were high at Peach Tree Creek and were again heavy at Franklin and Nashville. Less than 100 surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Henry D. Clayton and I.G.W. Steedman, Lieutenant Colonel Michael B. Locke, and Majors S.L. Knox and Jere N. Williams. Letter from Nancy Manning, wife of Leon Manning who is his great-great grandson, states "one source says he served with Picket's men in SC" "died in 1864, 8 days after birth of daughter Eliza Joshua Thomas Grace, who was named for him" Daughter Susan Anna Grace Burrows also named her only son Joshua David Burrows, after both grandfathers, Joshua Grace and David Burrows. 3

Joshua married Eliza ANDERSON , daughter of John J. ANDERSON and Elinor "Ellie" UNKNOWN , on 11 Mar 1855 in Randolph County GA. They had five children: Susan Anne, Millard Fillmore, John M., Eliza , and Joshua Thomas "Josh" .

Susan Anne GRACE was born on 20 Oct 1855 in Alabama, died on 22 Oct 1893 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, TX, at age 38, and was buried in Old North Cemetery, Nacogdoches, TX.

Susan next married William Muckleroy BURROWS ,4 son of David BURROWS and Elizabeth Beatrice KING , on 7 Jan 1875 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, TX. They had two children: Joshua David and Myrtie H. .

 

Millard Fillmore GRACE was born in Feb 1857 in Alabama. 5
 

Millard next married Theodocia STRAHAN , daughter of John Giles STRAHAN Sr. and Eliza E. HIGNITE , on 16 Dec 1886 in Nacogdoches County, TX. They had 11 children: J. P. "Pete," James B., Jewel, Joshua T., Annie L., Nettie Odie, Clinton Fillmore, Clydie, Ettie, Vivian , and Ura .

 

John M. GRACE was born in 1859 in Alabama, died in 1883 in Nacogdoches County, TX, at age 24, and was buried in Cold Springs Cemetery, Nacogdoches County, TX. Apparently there was an epidemic of some kind and John and both of his children died at the same general time - 1883.
 

General Notes: 1870 Henry County Census lists him as "James".

John next married Willie CAVIN on 29 Apr 1881 in Nacogdoches County, TX. They had two children: Lela and Infant Son .



 

Eliza GRACE 6 was born in 1862 in Henry County, AL 7 and died on an unknown date.
General Notes: only record I have found of Eliza is on the 1870 Henry County Census. 7

 

Joshua Thomas "Josh" GRACE was born on 4 Jul 1864 in AL, died in 1949, at age 85, and was buried in Cold Springs Cemetery, Nacogdoches County, TX.
 

General Notes: Email from great- grandson, (kburk@cox-internet.com) states that she died when he was 7 and that they always celebrated family reunions on the 4th of July for "Ma's birthday" Letter from Nancy Manning wife of Leon Manning, her great-grandson, received 8/17/02 states that their "family history has always said that Josh's father died 8 days before her birth in 1864 and that she was named for her father." 1920 Census states that Josie was 54 born in Alabama; both parents born Alabama. 1900 Census states she was born July 1864 in Al; both parents born AL. Had 10 children - 8 living in 1900.

Josh next married John Pendleton BURKHALTER , son of William BURKHALTER and Sarah REID , on 20 Oct 1881 in Nacogdoches County, TX. They had 11 children: (No Given Name), (No Given Name), Lula, Josephine, Thurman, Ernest, James Lester, Gracie, Lillie, Lennis Leon , and Willie Gilford .

James Linson GRACE 1 2 8 was born in 1838 in Georgia and was buried in Hurricane Church Cemetery, Geneva Co., AL.
 

James married Rachael ELLIS . They had ten children: Marion B, Noel Hamilton, Elizabeth M, James W, Mariann S, Thomas L, Rachael L, Martha T, Robert Lee , and Angus Dowling .

Marion B GRACE 1 was born in 1862 in Alabama.
 

Noel Hamilton GRACE 9 was born on 30 Sep 1862 in Dale County, AL, died on 19 Sep 1941 in Houston, TX, at age 78, and was buried in Resthaven Cemetery, Houston, TX. 9
 

Noel next married Anna Lula GRACE ,9 daughter of Agrippa Sawyer GRACE and Martha A. WINDHAM . They had ten children: Maggie, Nettie, Jessie, Maude, Bryan, Benton, Lola Mae, Myrtle, Clara , and Willie D. .

Elizabeth M GRACE 1 was born in 1866 in Alabama.
 

James W GRACE 1 was born in 1868 in Alabama.
 

Mariann S GRACE 1 was born in 1871 in Alabama.
 

Thomas L GRACE 1 was born in 1873 in Alabama.
 

Rachael L GRACE 1 was born in 1875 in Alabama.
 

Martha T GRACE 1 was born in 1877 in Alabama.
 

Robert Lee GRACE 1 10 was born on 21 Sep 1879 in Alabama and died on 26 Feb 1958 in Fort Towson, Oklahoma, at age 78.
 

Robert next married Ada BUNCH . They had three children: James L., Bula M. , and Living .

Noel Hamilton GRACE 1 2 8 was born on 10 Sep 1841 in Upson County, GA, died on 17 Feb 1902 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas, at age 60, and was buried in Owensville Cemetery, Robertson County, TX. 13
 

Noel married Martha Sally Anthony BARNES in 1873. They had nine children: Carrie (Clara) Irene, Maggie Battle, Richard T, Anna Lee, James Cleveland, Frances Etta, Rosa Barnes, Willie Hamilton , and Sally Anthony .

Carrie (Clara) Irene GRACE 11 14 was born in 1873 in Robertson County, Texas 14 and died after 1950 in California. 1

Anna Lee GRACE 1 11 was born on 20 Feb 1881 in Robertson County, Texas and died in Jun 1950 in California, at age 69.
 

Anna next married George WRIGHT .

James Cleveland GRACE 1 was born on 2 Feb 1885 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas and died on 12 May 1968 in Lubbock, Texas, at age 83.
 

James next married Pallamae CARLTON on 18 Dec 1904 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas. They had one child: Living .

James next married Maude F MARSHALL in 1909.

Frances Etta GRACE 1 was born on 3 Mar 1887 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas and died on 18 May 1977 in Hearne, Texas, at age 90.
 

Frances next married David WHITE on 14 Feb 1906.

Rosa Barnes GRACE 1 was born on 16 Feb 1889 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas and died on 16 Jul 1945, at age 56.
 

Rosa next married Lucian L LUSTER .

Willie Hamilton GRACE 1 was born on 13 May 1890 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas and died on 17 Aug 1968 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas, at age 78.
 

Willie next married Lizzie BAXTER on 6 Jul 1913 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas. They had three children: Wayne, Walter , and T*** .

Sally Anthony GRACE 1 was born on 22 Jan 1892 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas and died on 30 Aug 1981 in California, at age 89.

Agrippa Sawyer GRACE 1 2 8 13 was born on 31 Jan 1846 in Upson County, GA, died on 7 Dec 1926 in Franklin, Robertson County, Texas, at age 80, and was buried in 1926 in Owensville Cemetery, Robertson Co. TX.
 

General Notes: Agrippa Sawyer Grace, enlisted in Co E 60th Ala Inf at Abbeville, Henry Co Ala, 4 Nov 1863 as a Private CSA. He was wounded at Petersburg, VA, 16 Nov 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at the Appamattx Court House, VA, 9 April 1865.

Agrippa married Martha A. WINDHAM , daughter of Anthony WINDHAM and Martha A. McMURRAY , on 30 Jan 1872. They had three children: Anna Lula, Phillip O. , and Morgan .

Anna Lula GRACE 9 was born on 10 Dec 1872 in Alabama and died on 20 May 1955 in Dallas, TX, at age 82. 9
 

Anna next married Noel Hamilton GRACE ,9 son of James Linson GRACE and Rachael ELLIS . They had ten children: Maggie, Nettie, Jessie, Maude, Bryan, Benton, Lola Mae, Myrtle, Clara , and Willie D. .

Phillip O. GRACE 14 15 was born in 1876 in Florida.
 

Phillip next married Mollie A. .16 They had two children: Raymond and Preston .

Agrippa next married DELLA before 1899. They had two children: Nola and Alton .

Nola GRACE 16 was born in 1900.
 

Alton GRACE 16 was born in 1905.
 

Morgan B. GRACE 1 2 8 was born on 12 Mar 1848 and died on 19 May 1873 in Ozark, Dale County, AL, at age 25.
 

General Notes: Extracted from Henry Co. Register 30 May 1873 Samuel S. Grace age 18 died on the 17th of May, 1873 of Typhoid Pneumonia. Interred at Union cemetery in Ozark Al. His brother Morgan died 2 days later of the same thing. Which would mean Morgan died on May 19, 1873

Viola Huntige GRACE was born on 18 Sep 1872 in Ozark, Dale County, AL and died on 14 Feb 1949 in Ozark, Dale County, AL, at age 76.
 

Philip C. GRACE 1 2 8 17 was born on 16 Mar 1850 in Upson County GA, died on 15 Feb 1905 in Ozark, Dale County, AL, at age 54, and was buried in Buried Claybank, Cemetery, Ozark, Dale County, AL.
 

General Notes: 6 months old on the 1850 Upson County Census

Susan married Henry W ARNOLD in 1869. They had 15 children: Eliza Leora, Emma Ernestine, Mattie Jane, George Christopher, William Henry, Mariam Luella, John Madison, Amanda Elizabeth, Millard James, Florence Stella, Jacob Leroy, Jesse Ernest, Robert Davis, Oscar Clarence , and Anna Stasia .

Eliza Leora ARNOLD 1 was born in 1870 and died in 1907, at age 37.
 

Eliza next married William S CASON in 1891.

Emma Ernestine ARNOLD 1 was born in 1871 and died in 1873, at age 2.
 

Mattie Jane ARNOLD 1 was born in 1872.
 

Mattie next married James BUZBEE in 1893.

George Christopher ARNOLD 1 was born in 1873 and died in 1879, at age 6.
 

William Henry ARNOLD 1 was born in 1896.
 

William next married Living DAVIS .

Mariam Luella ARNOLD 1 was born in 1878 and died in 1942, at age 64.

Samuel S GRACE 1 8 19 was born on 26 Sep 1854 in Henry County, AL 19 and died on 17 May 1873 in Ozark, Dale County, AL, at age 18.
 

General Notes: Extracted from Henry Co. Register 30 May 1873 Samuel S. Grace age 18 died on the 17th of May, 1873 of Typhoid Pneumonia. Interred at Union cemetery in Ozark Al. His brother Morgan died 2 days later of the same thing.
